1. Details

Wad Description: SCIENTIST2 [sci2.wad] is a custom wad for the classic computer game Doom2.
sci2.wad is the latest version of sci.wad which was released earlier (October 2002).
		 sci2.wad contians:

The first 20 maps make up the single player based part. Beyond that I added
ten DM levels as a bonus. They are based on maps from the three episodes.

New textures: yes
sprites replaced: some. The scientist sprite has been redone from scratch.
Weapons replaced: 	Yes, five of them;
-Super Shotgun has been replaced with two shotguns	(based on the doom shotgun)
-Chaingun is replaced with a AK47 (based on photograph)
-Rocketlauncher is replaced with a crossbow (from scratch)
-Plasmagun is replaced by a flamethrower (from scratch, except the doom-hand)
-BFG is replaced by a flamegrenades (from scratch, except the doom-hand)

Differences between sci2.wad and sci.wad: sci2 contains 9 new single player based maps and
10 new deathmatch maps and further includes new textures some
new flats and sprites including four new weapon replacements (AK47,
						crossbow, flamethrower and flamegrenades).
Also some textures have been redone.
The scientist sprite has been redone from scratch.
From the old maps (1-11) only map7 and 9 were (slightly) altered to
						fix some bugs.

Thanks to: -id Software
-the builders of the editing programs used
-Ocean's Edge for their great midis
-playtester: Thomas "revolution" van der Velden
-the rest of the Doom community.

Additional credits:	-I ripped the sound I used for my AK47 (replaces Chaingun) from a wad called weap05.wad by Daniel.
The weap wads can be found in 99Weapup.Zip which can be found at
			the idgames archive (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/).
-I ripped the sound for the crossbow (replacing the rocketlauncher) from strife.
-The sound of the flamethrower was taken from a wad named fireimp.wad.
-I modified scisetup.bat from the setup file from batmandoom

[2]	How to play SCIENTIST2
******************************
If you're using a source port you can start playing sci2 without reading this chapter.
If you're using ZDoom for example you can simply drag and drop SCI2.wad on the ZDoom.exe and start playing.
Bear in mind that SCI2.wad contains an internal dehacked file.

As mentioned before it is possible to play the wad without a source port under MSDOS. Here's how:

-unzip sci2.zip in your doom2 directory
-copy the files from the scivanil folder to your main doom directory (where doom2.wad and doom2.exe) are.
-run scisetup.bat
-type "sci2 -file sci2.wad"

Note that this will not harm your original files.

[3]	Story
*************
I changed the story a bit. Here it goes:

When early humans ate from the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil it brought pain and misery in the world, cursed
the ground and man became evil. By gaining this knowledge god decided man should no longer be allowed to be able
to live forever. Thus turning the tree of life (immorality) into a forbidden tree.

As science continues to improve it's understanding on life, origine, death and immortality it seems as if mankind
again is at the point eating from a forbidden fruit.

In our story a scientist is near the discovery of human immortality. He believes we don't need god to achieve immortality
but can gain it through science.

god is not pleased with this disobedience and as before he decides to turn mankind's home into a less comfortable place.
As the scientist continues his work earth is hit by natural disasters and strange monsters are taking over.
But the man of science is not impressed by all this and ignores all of god's warnings.

It seems there is only one way to prevent the earth from becoming an even greater hell for humans;
to kill the scientist.

but be warned: he appears to be carring a portable teleporter enabling him to escape you.

...

Okay, It's a lame story. Please don't take it to seriously; I have no intention to offend anyone with this wad.

Some quotes to explain some of the map names:

01 the Scientist
"The scientist does not study nature because it is useful;
he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful."
-Henri Poincare quotes (French mathematician, physicist and philosopher of science, 1854-1912)

02	Kapital
"The theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property."
-Karl Marx

07	Siberia
"People who are truly convinced that they have advanced the frontier of science
would not demand freedom for new ideas to coexist next to old, but to replace them."
-V. I. Lenin, What Is to Be Done? (1902)

09 Bio Lab
"The product of mental labor - science - always stands far below its value,
because the labor-time necessary to reproduce it has no relation at all to
the labor-time required for its original production."
-Karl Marx

11	Pure As Snow
"I want to walk in the snow And not leave a footprint
I want to walk in the snow And not soil it’s purity."
-Manic Street Preachers, 4ST 7LB

12.	Crown of Thorns
"Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
Pilate said to them, 'Here is the man!'"
-John 19:5

13.	Cursed Ground
"The ground is cursed because of you.
You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life.
It will produce thorns and thistles for you."
-Genesis 3:17-18

14.	Dogma
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world,
and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."
-Karl Marx, Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right

15.	Son of Man
"Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat upon it;
from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne"
- Rev 20:11-12

16.	Zarathustra
"Once blasphemy against God was the greatest blasphemy;
but God died, and those blasphemers died along with him.
Now to blaspheme against the earth is the greatest sin,
and to rank love for the Unknowable higher than the meaning of the earth!
-Nietzsche, Thus spoke Zarathustra

17	Second Horseman
"When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!"
Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.
Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other.
To him was given a large sword."
-Rev 6:3-4

18	Zilzal
"When the earth is shaken with its (final) earthquake.
And when the earth throws out its burdens,
And man will say: "What is the matter with it?"
That Day it will declare its information (about all what happened over it of good or evil).
Because your Lord has inspired it.
That Day mankind will proceed in scattered groups that they may be shown their deeds.[]
So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it.
And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom, shall see it."
-Quran; 99. al-Zilzal: The Shaking

20	Mount of Congregation
"I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north,
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High"
-Isa. 14:13-14

[6]	Music
*************
The original plan was that a friend of mine was going to make three midis and that Johnatone was going to make
the rest of the needed music. I've seem to have lost contact with Johnatone however so I just used midis from
Dream Theater instead. These midis can be legally downloaded from their official website.

My friend's band is called 'Ocean's Edge' and you can find their site at:
http://www.oceansedge.nl

Many thanks to Piet (that's his name).

[9]	Notes
*************
NOTE 1:	SCI.wad SCIsetup.bat (or any of the other unzipped files) will not alter you original
doom2.wad or doom2.exe; using scientist2 is perfectly safe.

Note 2: As mentioned earlier The first two episodes (map 1-11) of sci2.wad have been released
earlier (October 2002) in a wad called sci.wad. These episodes have remained virtually unaltered
	in sci2 making sci.wad a bit obsolete.
Demos and savegames made for sci.wad should work fine with sci2.wad (perhaps not for map07).

Note 3: If you have some reviews or demos please let me know they're very much appreciated!

Note 4: For some reason some people seem to think the wad has a anti-Soviet plot. No such plot was intended.

Note 5: I tested the deathmatch maps with ZDaemon and I found a bug; The crossbow has some trouble firing.
Now, I have no doubt this has to do with the alterations I made with DeHackEd but the crossbow works fine with
ZDoom and vanilla Doom2 so I blame the problem on ZDaemon! I got it working right in ZDaemon at one point but then
when I tried it in ZDoom and vanilla Doom it didn't work right so I decided to go with the version you have now.
If you want to have to crossbow working fine in ZDaemon you should run sci2.wad with SCI2_zdaemon_crossbow_fix.wad.

NOTE 6: As said Sci2.wad is made to be able to run with the vanilla doom2.exe. This means I designed the maps with the idea
that the player can't jump. So don't jump.

NOTE 7: Please do not take the story to seriously;
There is no quarrel between science and god
(...since one of them does not exist).

I Hope I've informed you enough and you'll enjoy playing the wad,

Weapons replaced: 	Yes, five of them;
-Super Shotgun has been replaced with two shotguns	(based on the doom shotgun)

It seems there is only one way to prevent the earth from becoming an even greater hell for humans;
to kill the scientist.

but be warned: he appears to be carring a portable teleporter enabling him to escape you.

...

Okay, It's a lame story. Please don't take it to seriously; I have no intention to offend anyone with this wad.

Some quotes to explain some of the map names:

01 the Scientist
"The scientist does not study nature because it is useful;
he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful."

15.	Son of Man
"Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat upon it;
from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne"
- Rev 20:11-12

16.	Zarathustra
"Once blasphemy against God was the greatest blasphemy;
but God died, and those blasphemers died along with him.

"I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;

NOTE 7: Please do not take the story to seriously;
There is no quarrel between science and god
(...since one of them does not exist).

I Hope I've informed you enough and you'll enjoy playing the wad,
