This was the first level I ever made...Looking back on it, I think it turned out pretty well! The D & D groove stayed with me for a long time though.... -Zdim (R. Carlson) - - - - - - - - - - - - - The CREATURES of LIGHT and DARKNESS wad - - - - - - A sinister and surprising level for Raven Software's classic game: HERETIC! v4.0 (2-4 player deathmatch) v2.0 (2 player cooperative game) v1.0 (solo game) File Title : COLD10.WAD (.ZIP, or whatever) Author : Richard Carlson Description : You arrive at Widow's Grieve. It is dusk and not a sound is heard across the forbidding quagmire. Briefly, you consider heading back to Merz's for another stiff one, but some dark magic has silently filled in the tunnel behind you with stone... You curse D'Sparil and this mad quest. You shudder, knowing full well that luck, as much as anything, has kept you one step ahead of the Serpent Rider so far. If any of their kind were to ever become aware of this place... Well, let's just say it would be a very bad thing. The locations of the Seven Places of Power are known by an even fewer number of mortal sorcerors. (And sorcerors are pretty damn rare.) Most of them are smart enough to keep their mouths shut. Then again, Merz told you... You magically summon your last few possessions with an absent gesture. A bottomless pack, a good shield spell and a jar of healthy juice appear nearby. You meditate awhile and then review the facts: A Power Place IS nearby. You have to find the entrance. A plethora of Legendary Artifacts no doubt await the eager, heroic mage. Death (or worse) is the fate of the foolish. Be patient, resourceful and, above all, observant, and you may live to talk about it. If the means to destroy a Serpent Rider can be found here, then surely a way of escape for you must also exist as well... You sigh. Your feet are soaked with the cold, oily, green muck. Time to get going. It would be nice to at least find someplace dry before nightfall... Author's Comments : 1. As with any Heretic level, please play COLD10 in a dimly lit or dark room. I recommend that you NOT use gamma correction unless you really have an unusually dark monitor. Gamma correction tends to "wash out" the otherwise deep, rich Heretic colors. I have carefully chosen the light levels to fit the "underground" setting. Some parts of this level are dimly lit. This is not to disorient the player. It is to create the proper mood and to exploit certain textures that would look unconvincing in brighter light. (Look around for a magic torch. They last quite a while and are the only thing that will temporarily banish the "darkness that is darker than darkness itself", the Spell of Fourfold Darkness, often encountered in such places as this...) 2. Be smart. Save often. Use your Heretic ITEMS carefully. COLD10 is designed to make use of all of the Heretic specials in ways that are integral to the plot. If you fall into a lava pit with no way out don't go cryin' to mama. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Play Information * Game Type : Heretic Episode and Level # : E1M1 Single Player : Yes Cooperative 2-4 Player : No Deathmatch 2-4 Player : No Difficulty Settings : Yes New Sounds : No New Graphics : No Demos Replaced : None Crushing Ceilings : None (...and there was great rejoicing...)
