You'll need a copy of DooM II and a source port that supports the Boom format (DOOM Retro, PrBoom-Plus, etc.) Contained are 11 maps, 1 credits map, an older version of MAP04 and a map that prevents further progress. Sargasso has extensive use of DeHackEd, so certain mods may be incompatible with this wad. Sargasso supports single-player and deathmatch, however co-op player starts have been included. Recommend playing with translucent textures enabled, as it makes use of translucent force fields. Read about Doom source ports and requirements to play online for further instructions. Contents: [1] Story [2] Missions Content/Briefing [3] Difficulty Settings [4] Weapons [5] Powerups [6] Your Enemies [7] Tips [8] Deathmatch [9] History [10] Credits [1] Story: ================== Six years after the conflict of the Lylat Wars, Wolf has gathered many former Venomian soldiers along with his Star Wolf team to harvest the technology left over from the defeat of Andross into a new installation at Sargasso. Over time it would expand to becoming the largest sector home to many space pirates and illegal activites. One year later, a mysterious portal opened up and swallowed an entire vessel full of Venom's high-tech weaponry, and troops are sent to investigate. Some of them had disappeared as well, leaving Wolf to check a freighter vessel that remains full of cargo. The ship appears empty, until Wolf is suddenly attacked by an unknown entity armed with a blaster. Wolf escapes with his life, only to find his Wolfen ship left outside is compromised and taken away by this strange new enemy. Now Wolf is trapped on the cargo vessel, and discovers he is no longer alone with strange insect-like creatures beginning to flood the vessel. The only way of escape is through the air lock into a detached pod ship, where he may be able to detonate an explosive tracking device already on the freighter ship. As he prepares to destroy the ship, a distress signal is sent out to Wolf that the Sargasso Hideout has been completely compromised by this new alien force, and now it's up to Wolf to recapture the hideout and banish this unknown adversary completely from their territory... [2] (a) Mission Contents: ================== Level 1: Freighter Level 2: Red Zone Level 3: Surveyor Level 4: Multiplier Level 5: Starfighter Level 6: The Terminal Level 7: Cannon Ridge Level 8: Clones Level 9: Alien Colony Level 10: The Portal Level 11: Danger Zone (b) Mission Briefs: ================== Mission 1: Freighter A cargo ship full of bad news; you must escape through the air lock and into the detached pod ship to detonate the compromised cargo vessel. Mission 2: Red Zone As you board the familiar Sargasso Hideout, the disturbing truth is already revealed; it seems that unknown entity stole a bit of your DNA from the attack, as they are already working to produce clones with unknown intent. Wipe the floor with their sorry carcasses and reclaim what is rightfully yours. Mission 3: Surveyor Now on the roof of the Sargasso Hideout, the surveying lookout is crawling with footsoldiers and strange tentacle creatures which can survive the vacuum of space. Infiltrate and neautralize the threat to re-establish contact with your fellow space pirates. Mission 4: Multiplier Now you've entered a detached hangar facility as part of the Sargasso Space Zone. Work your way from the lowest floor to clean out the enemy threat and take the fight to them. Mission 5: Starfighter After reclaiming the Sargasso hideout, it's time to find out what this enemy threat is all about. You've boarded one of their starfighters and looking to make a mess of the place after trying to better you at robbing and pillaging of your own precious goods. Mission 6: The Terminal A dangerous docking bay where some of their most lethal monstrosities are roaming about; watch your step and take what goods you can to prepare for this firefight; you're gonna need it. Mission 7: Cannon Ridge After you've shown them who's boss, it's your job to find the source of this strange threat and close the portal that has opened up. They have some kind of tracking installation built into an asteroid that looks like a good place to search and destroy. Mission 8: Clones The strange asteroid base signals you to a small space station where all seems quiet. Unfortunately after destroying the unfinished abominations found on the Sargasso space station, it seems the enemy had taken with them a solitary clone pod and harvested these monstrosities. Much to their regret it proved to be a dangerous effort as the few aliens on this solitary ship were killed by these clones, and now you enter the fray to display your dominance as the original of the species. Mission 9: Alien Colony Finally, you've made it to a strange colony hidden on the underside of a meteor floating through space. There may yet be a truth to uncover about this place, but it's hidden deep somewhere past loads of alien guards and other bio- weaponry, so tread carefully and lay them to permanant rest as you search for this hidden portal to their world... Mission 10: The Portal Turns out that portal you just jumped through was only a connection to a gigantic mothership waiting to enter the Lylat System, so now the tables have turned against you and left you somewhere deep within the enemy's lair. Your mission is to escape the mothership and make your way back through the portal to the other side. Hopefully you'll find the answer to this threat leading them on the other side. Mission 11: Danger Zone This is the end - you've made a miraculous escape back to the Lylat System and onto a sharp-looking space cruiser that appears to be the home of the enemy leader. It can't be far now that you've found a way onto the leading space vessel for the threat, and now it's up to you to destroy the smaller dimensional ship which holds the portal open. Now you can eliminate these strange alien forces for good. [3] Difficulty Settings: ================== Sargasso has been balanced carefully for each difficulty setting - so be sure to select the one that best fits your playstyle. Easy Mode - Fewer enemies, double ammo/health, damage is halved. Normal Mode - Same fewer enemies, ammunition and health intake is the regular amount and so is enemy fire. Hard Mode - Some extra oppression for those who aren't looking to go too casual. More hard-bodied enemies to crowd your exploration. Expert Mode - Seasoned players looking to face down some more unwanted encounters and know what to prepare for - this is for experienced players that know about the enemies and have the confidence to take it head-on without much more reprieve. Insanity Mode - This shouldn't even be an option; fast-moving enemies that resurrect after 8 seconds and is guaranteed to make many situations close to impossible. Choose this if you hate your life. [4] Weapons: ================== Blaster: Standard issue rapid-fire blaster - comes with 100 shots. Pump-Action Shotgun: Strong and accurate single-shot action - works in long distance like a rifle. Duelwielder: Powerful burst attack alternative of the shotgun. Takes time to reload so watch your back. Minigun: Rapid-fire weapon stronger than the regular blaster - works well in crowded corridors. Missile Launcher: Deadly blast radius weapon - make sure to keep your distance from the enemy. Plasma Cannon: Rapid-fire laser that works wonders on tougher enemies. Bio-Diffuser Cannon: Destructive wide-range attack that sweeps the area. Available only in deathmatch. Berserker Claw: Refills health to 100 and gives you a more powerful claw attack. A good ammo saver if you're into that. Chainsaw: Not really intended to be a weapon, but hey, it could come in use. [5] Powerups: ================== Ammo Capacity Unit: Extends the capacity of your ammo storage. Wolf Sphere (Blue): Recharges health by 100. Super Wolf Sphere (Gold): Recharges health and armor by 200. Cloaking Sphere: Become a partially invisible target. Good for open shooting ranges, bad for projectile encounters. Infinity Wolf Sphere: Become invincible for a short period of time - guess it doesn't last for infinity... Space Protection Suit: Tough suit that can withstand the vacuum of space and dangerous liquids. Guidance System: A computer that scans and maps the entire area you're in. A handy device for when you're lost. [6] Your Enemies: ================== Trooper: Red-outfit, bad attitude. Wields a long-range weapon so don't wander too carelessy. Commando: A savage yellow murderer. Carries a minigun so don't dawdle or you'll be toast. Pyro Guy: Flame-throwing bad guys in black. Make sure you kill them quickly or they'll light you up. Elite: A dangerous plasma gunner in blue. Tougher than your regular Joe so make sure to break out your best guns. Bomber: These guys just have a deathwish - they'll come running at you with a bomb in hand, so do the civil thing and blast them to kingdom come - preferably from a distance. Beta Scythian: An Aparoid-like creature with long reaching claws - possibly a progenitor of the species. Gutterbrain: Floaty brain, bad teeth, fires projectiles - too many bad memories of a past employer. You should probably kill them to be on the safe side. Aracnobyte: Another floaty brainy geek enemy that fires plasma - thankfully they're quite fragile so taking them out shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Red Mirage: Yet another floaty-goaty. Likes playing hot-potato with unsuspecting players. Better toss him some hot laser blasts and show 'em who's king of the court. Gorgamos: A slow-moving pyro-wannabe and a sucker for pain, although they have more staying power being such a large target and they fire two rounds instead of one. Virtual Security Guard: Tall and warped, these guys like their homing missiles. Steer clear of their projectiles that have a thing for illegal U-turns and don't tread too close because they'd like nothing more than to deck your lights out. Cyber Stagnator: When he was chucked head-first into the junk pile, it's safe to say he was in a pretty bad mood. Armed with a missile launcher for an arm, this guy is no joke. Send him back to the junk heap or you'll get incinerated in the blink of an eye. Sinister Overlord: This creepy guy marches around with a unique targeting device that can blast you several feet into the air. To make matters worse, this particular cyborg experiment has a bizzare time-warping device which can undo all your hard work. Better add him to your hitlist before he hits you first. Clones: Those dirty extraterrestrial scum have somehow smuggled your DNA and created a weapon to try and top your own quick movements and good looks. Send these freaks of nature back to the testing tubes and establish your own dominance as the true Wolf. Desolator: The true successor to the failed junk heap cybers, these flying monstrosities fire a barrage of flames and missiles that go together like peanuts and bubble gum. To destroy them is an undertaking fit only for the strongest. Arachnophyte: Giant floaty machine gun-wielding weirdos. A definition of pain if you lack cover. Shoot, kill, destroy, move on. [7] Tips: ================== +Sommetimes glass can be shootable in certain areas, so make sure you check with your weapons instead of your head. +There are few ladders that can be found - if it wasn't obvious these can be climbed, as it's not merely a decoration. +There's always the possibility a switch can have an effect that isn't immediately obvious until you backtrack or explore nearby areas, though this has mostly been avoided. +Pay attention if you see areas with red text like sector security monitors, they can sometimes serve a vital function towards the map. +There are some speedrun routes that were included in some of the maps if you're into that - some of them can be very difficult to reach due to random elements like enemy fire and 30-second doors (doors that only stay open for the first 30 seconds of the map). +Make sure you explore every area - while it may seem obvious, some weapons may not be available in the way of the map's progression. +There are circular-looking white switches which can be shot, this is used sometimes to progress certain maps. [8] Deathmatch ================== Deathmatch has been implemented into Sargasso with separate deathmatch arenas from the actual play areas, so you can go head-to-head in any Boom ports that support this multiplayer format. List of Deathmatch maps + Player starts: MAP01: Gateway Outreach - 8 Player Starts MAP02: Interchange - 4 Player Starts MAP03: Submarine Plant - 6 Player Starts MAP04: Simple Map 01 - 4 Player Starts MAP05: Supply Vessel - 6 Player Starts MAP06: Docking Bay - 6 Player Starts MAP07: Cavern Dugout - 6 Player Starts MAP08: Katina Base - 4 Player Starts MAP09: Fichina Base - 6 Player Starts MAP10: Simple Map 02 - 4 Player Starts MAP11: Simple Map 03 - 4 Player Starts [9] History ================== Sargasso began development on December 7th, 2017 intended to be a 3-map experiment that plays around with space themes with Wolf O'Donnell as its protagonist. This was to be the next venture outside of vanilla constraints with the release of another 3-map mini-episode called Oceanside, which was released months earlier in September. This was also to be the first time using DeHackEd, using monsters as inspired from Thursday Night Survival's Total Randomization rotation and the two MAYhem 2018 Purple and Orange projects. As a three-map exercise, it was to have fewer monsters with only foot- soldiers and a couple of monsters, however as the learning process for DeHackEd took more time and work, more monsters were implemented and more maps were being developed. Over time it would become clear that a full-fledged episode would be in the works instead of a shorter mapset similar to Oceanside. The idea to include Wolf and create something within his universe goes back to Smash 4's last DLC character line-up, when Wolf didn't return as a playable fighter in Smash. As a side-activity a model pack was downloaded for Garry's Mod to try and turn Wolf O'Donnell into a player skin for Doom in early 2016. It was much later that the idea came to try making a set of maps to feature Wolf as the main character. Over a year into development, a new skin for wolf was created as based on his appearance in Assault, and the old player skin was used instead for the clone enemy.
