Description:
-----------

"Theme Shock 2" (thshock2.wad) is more than just a Doom II conversion
of the original thshck1.wad. The original Doom textures have been
converted of course, but lots of new graphics have been added and the
logic changed around to improve the gameplay and make the storyline
more coherent. Doom II's Super Shotgun has been included just when you
need it most, and the Theme17 Flame Thrower has been added near the end
of the game.

Theme Shock 2 requires the Alien-Predator-Terminator Theme17 Patch
(theme17.zip) by Werner Spahl. This zip contains the A.P.T.
graphics/sound resources and DeHackEd patch. It is available at:
  ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/themes/apt/theme17.zip

It is not designed to run with 'Plain Vanilla' Doom (it may work but
it hasn't been tested). You will need a Doom Source Port which can
import DeHackEd patches and pwads containing sprite graphics - such as
Boom, PRboom, MBF, SMMU, ZDoom, Legacy, etc. (see below for the known
bugs with each of these ports).

Thanks to:
---------

My wife for her incredible patience, love and devotion.

Bill Lachance ([email protected])
- author of the original Doom I version (thshck1.wad).
The majority of the credit for Theme Shock 2 goes to Bill.
I've just tweaked the gameplay and polished the presentation.

Werner Spahl - author of the Theme17 Alien-Predator-Terminator Patch
(theme17.zip). What a great job Werner did way back in 1994/1995.
Here's his email address from 1995 for what it's worth:
[email protected]

Paul Corfiatis ([email protected]), a fellow Aussie, for
allowing me to use some of the music he composed himself for his own
Doom wads. The main level music is from his Doom I level "Toxin
Refinery" (pe1_tox.wad). I needed something with both a futuristic
space feel and a evil hellish feel at the same time and I think Paul's
music fits really well with the themes in Theme Shock 2. The inter-
mission music is from his Doom II level "Verada" (verada.wad).
I needed something with a futuristic military feel about it - kinda
like Wolfenstein3D meets Star Wars. The intro music is from his Doom II
level set pc_wolf.wad. Do yourself a favour and get the complete set
of Paul's wads- they're all excellent.

Enjay and Mark Matheson ([email protected]) - for the modified Doom
status bar which I further modified. From "Enjay ZDOOM" (njzd2.zip).

Coop Beta Testers - Blake Wilfong -- The Wondersmith! and Bryan Shelton
These blokes were the coop beta testers for Strain (Alpha Dog Alliance)
and HacX (Banjo Software) so they know what they're doing!
A few quotes from Blake:
"...we were able to complete the map, and we had lots of fun doing it."
"Another thing we co-op guys like is *tough* levels, and this one is
plenty tough!"

André Majorel - author of DeuTex v4.2.2
Thanks for your on-going development of DeuTex and for making my
life that little bit easier.

Velocity Inc. - for a few textures ripped from Strife.
Great game guys, but why'd ya have to go broke? If you hadn't, we'd
have the source code and be playing Strife in high-res by now :(

Thanks for the help guys.

The Story:
---------

UAC Intelligence has found evidence of technology being sold to the
aliens. Computer and laboratory equipment has gone missing and an
internal secret investigation has led a batallion of marines to this
lonely outpost on a forgotten planet where it is believed the aliens
are making major advances in genetic engineering.

An advance party of raw recruits has been teleported down to the
surface to soften them up. We don't expect heavy resistance from a
bunch of scientists so it should be good experience for these recruits.
When you get down there keep an eye on them because they've only had
minimal training and could easily get caught in cross-fire.

Your job is to shut down the planet's Defensive Shield so we can blast
this whole outpost to hell and put an end to their genetic research.
The power generator for the planet's Defensive Shield is protected by
three blast doors spread around the base. After shutting down the
power generator you will need to find a Yellow DataBoard to gain access
to the Defensive Shield Switchroom located in the middle of the central
hub. The UAC Corporal suspected of selling the computer and laboratory
equipment has gone missing and Intelligence Reports suggest that he
may be being held captive by the aliens. Rescue the hostage and under
no circumstances allow him to be killed - we'd rather this lousy
traitor rot in a UAC prison!

Once you turn off the Defensive Shield get out of there immediately
because the bombing will start exactly 5 minutes after we receive
confirmation of the shield being down.

Good luck marine.

How to use:
----------

1. Unzip theme17.zip and thshock2.zip to your Doom2 directory

2. SMMU, MBF, PRboom, Boom and ZDoom all use the same command line:
       -deh theme17 thshock2 -file theme17 thshock2

If you use Legacy (DOS only) you'll need to use the following
command line to overcome a bug with handling DeHackEd patches
(thanks to Don Tello [email protected] for pointing this out):
     doom3 -deh theme17.deh -file thshock2.deh theme17.wad thshock2.wad

3. From the Main Menu - select "SHOCK".

4. Your mission objectives are repeated on the Skill Setting menu.

* Play Information *

Game : DOOM II - requires a Source Port with support
for sprite graphics and DeHackEd patches - such
as Boom, PRboom, MBF, SMMU, ZDoom, Legacy, etc.
(see below for the known bugs with each port).

Episode and Level # : MAP 01
Single Player : Yes
Cooperative 2-4 Player: Yes - tested
Deathmatch 2-4 Player : No
Difficulty Settings : Yes
New Sounds : Yes - in theme17.wad
New Graphics : Yes - heaps in theme17.wad and a few here from
Doom I, Strife, and my own creations.
New Music : Yes - intro, map01 and intermission
Demos Replaced : An external demo has been supplied
(thshock2.lmp) but it only runs synchronously
with PRboom or Boom. It shows me on
                        Ultra-Violence doing 100% kills/items/secrets.
I'm no Doom God so watch this if you think it's
too hard or not enough health/ammo.

Try the following command line because PRboom
                        doesn't remember your screen resolution:
                        prboom -width 800 -height 600
                           -deh theme17 thshock2 -file theme17 thshock2
The internal demo will start automatically and
                        run for about 17 minutes.

Known Bugs:
----------

Theme Shock 2 Bugs:

I noticed a couple of misaligned textures as I was doing the final
testing. If I didn't see them then you're probably not going to either.

I forgot that Theme17 has destructable lamps but I added fancy lighting
to one of the rooms which doesn't disappear when the lamp is destroyed
... woops.

Source Port Bugs:

Legacy (Win32) v1.28 - thshock2.wad will not run at all due to a bug
                       with the Menu Logo.

Legacy (DOS) v1.28 - the internal demo crashes the game so start
                     playing before the demo starts.
                   - the Mission Objectives graphic on the Select Skill
                     screen has a faulty offset.
                   - the red key hostage flashes between green and red.
                   - Legacy crashes when you exit the game - no big
deal, just close the error message box.
                   - broken lamps are transparent (theme17.deh bug)
                   - the monster behaviour is slightly different from
the rest of the source ports which makes Theme
Shock 2 significantly harder - use a lower skill

glLegacy v1.29b15 - the red key hostage flashes between green and red.
                  - the sky appears in the floor/ceiling in one spot.

MBF v2.03 - the demo only runs for a minute before going out of synch.

SMMU v3.10 - the demo only runs for a minute before going out of synch.
           - the red key hostage is green

ZDoom v1.22 - a weird fault regularly occurs with the death sequence of
the Helper Marines - they suddenly turn into Terminators
or exploded aliens. This bug doesn't affect gameplay but
it's ugly and distracting when in the heat of battle.

Minor bug:
ZDoom v1.22, SMMU v3.10, Legacy v1.28 - the graphic for the exit switch
doesn't toggle before ending the level (okay in Boom, PRboom and MBF).

Recommendations:
PRboom - high res, no bugs, the demo works
SMMU - high res, no major bugs except demo goes out of synch,
my funky intermission screen is displayed at startup.
MBF - high res, no major bugs except demo goes out of synch
Legacy DOS - only if you can't possibly live without mouse-look
