Why do I have this file?

If you have the file zdmonsters.wad, then, more than likely, you attempted
to join or successfully joined a Deathmatch WITH Monsters game on a
Zandronum server. This file contains extra monster definitions beyond the
usual stock Doom monsters. The ZDoom Monster Resource Wad (v4.0) is a
resource that consists of two wad files; humans.wad and monsters.wad. These
two files have been merged into one zdmonsters.wad file by me for some
purely technical purposes of the Zandronum server you connected to. At the time of this writing, http://psg.mtu.edu/pub/pub/idgames/combos/monsters.zip is where you can obtain the original humans.wad/monsters.wad files which 
were merged.

The above paragraph should suffice to answer the opening question of why
you have the file zdmonsters.wad. To the best of my knowledge, this will
cause no harm to your computer. If you like reading alot, I will now 
explain the logic/reasoning which yielded the creation of zdmonsters.wad:

As a Doom map level designer, I frequently run servers on both Zandronum
and ZDaemon. Though I could very easily merge the monster wad files into my
own map wad creations, I feel that would unnecessarily tie the map wad to
a specific version of the monster resource. It would furthermore bloat the
map wad unnecessarily due to the monsters not needing to be loaded when
using the map wads in ZDaemon which have no support for them.

Simply putting the original monsters.wad and humans.wad files into the zip
file of my map wads doesn't work because it creates a race condition due to
Doomseeker or GetWad's capabilities of spawning multiple threads. There's
another monsters.wad out there which is available through the stock GetWad
servers. This file has nothing at all in common with The ZDoom Monster 
Resource Wad and is actually quite small; I believe it to be a single-map
wad. It will always finish downloading prior to my map zip's extraction of
an included monsters.wad. The game would then fail to launch due to the
monsters.wad file downloaded not matching the monsters.wad used by the 
server.
